Ride & Stride – Day 9, plus 1: Friday 16 September – INVERNESS to HOME

I may be exaggerating here – Scotland is hardly the world, but it does feel as though we have all been travelling at some considerable pace for the last ten days! There has barely been a quiet moment on Ride & Stride, and certainly my days have been full from dawn until well past dusk – driving, walking, writing, and partying. My flight from Inverness was barely airborne before I fell asleep, and it was only the announcement of our descent into Luton that woke me.
We have had so many super experiences on the NC500. The fact that everyone has completed the challenge in good health and without mishap reflects well on the fitness and training of all concerned and also on the planning that went into our Ride & Stride venture, right across the team.
After the weekend I will put together some further reflections and also, for those interested, a table of the mileages, ascents and times for each day, as covered by the cyclists, the runners and myself.

My Blog heading today is taken from a 2001 song by Marti Pellow, whilst he was taking a break from fronting Wet Wet Wet, off his debut solo album ‘Smile’.

Thank you Nick for sharing your journey with us. What a joy and many memories it has brought us.
I know what you mean about being round the world. Going along the north coast from Bettyhill, Ian said, “These mountains remind me of South Africa.” Then there were the weird mountain shapes that were better than The Glasshouse Mountains in Australia that we had driven miles out of our way to see. But best of all was heading south on a beautiful sunny day when, with the turquoise sea and lochs and mountains going in all directions twas better than anything we had seen in New Zealand. Talking of this, and Rachel will hate me for saying this, unless you take her with you, there are some great walks in New Zealand! Hope the four of us can catch up to hear more details straight from the horses mouth.
Best wishes and thanks
