So here it is – Merry Christmas! Where the year has gone I can’t explain – maybe it is all of my LETJOG Peaks walking trips that have helped 2023 to fly by so quickly!
I just wanted to wish you all a Happy Christmas, and the very best for 2024. I hope to be taking on another walking challenge in the spring, and I will be blogging here with an update during the first month or two of the New Year. Meanwhile, I will leave you now with a few recent photos of some winter walks that Rachel and I have undertaken.
A frosty start, near Ashley Green in Buckinghamshire . . .. . . on the footpath to the remains of the 13th Century Marlin Chapel in the fields near Rossway Park, where the thick undergrowth has been cleared recently to admit visitors (Thursday 30 November)A frozen website near Great Gaddesden in Hertfordshire . . . . . . and frosted grass outside nearby Nettleden (Saturday 2 December)Meanwhile, further to the north-west on the same morning, a spectacular temperature inversion – not my photo, but off the BBC website – was captured in the Malvern HillsEarly morning on Wednesday 6 December – a pall of fog hangs over the Bulbourne valley near Berkhamsted . . .. . . my walk taking me down from the Chiltern Hills . . .. . . and into the mist along the valley: this view is on the Grand Union Canal between Berkhamsted and Bourne EndAnd an hour or so later that morning, as the mist started to clearChristmas decorations in Bourne End, Hertfordshire (Friday 8 December)The River Windrush in spate, near Asthall in Oxfordshire (Sunday 10 December)
I hope that you enjoy the festivities – and of course walking in the winter wonderland!
Nick
Twilight across the meadows near Henlow in Bedfordshire (Monday 11 December)
The song ‘Winter Wonderland’ was recorded originally in 1934 by Richard Himber, and it has been covered by more than 200 artists over the decades. To music composed by Felix Bernard the lyrics were penned by Richard Bernhard Smith, and the line ‘walking in a winter wonderland’ certainly chimes with the experience of some of my December morning walks – on my playlist I have favoured Michael Bublé’s 2011 version.
Back to Burford, in Oxfordshire, where Rachel and I stayed with friends on Sunday 10 December – the slogan above the door reads ‘I Dream Of A Better World Where Chickens Can Cross The Road Without Having Their Motives Questioned’: we can but hope that 2024 gives us all that we pray for!

Lovely photos, really captured the season! Wishing you both a Happy Christmas and all the best for a healthy walking 2024!! Maybe I can join you on one sometime!! Was fun watching the seals and eating delicious scones at Godrevy but we didn’t get very far!!
Brilliant photos Nick, some very recognisable, but you have a real gift for spotting good subjects, atmospheres and lighting. What a collection you must have from just these last months alone! Thanks for giving me the chance to see some of them!
Have a very Happy Christmas All the best for New Year Liz
