Turn! Turn! Turn!

Cold as ice

This week, along with some photos from recent walks, I’m taking a look inwards as well as out, as the temperatures move into double digits and winter starts to give way to early spring. With the impending change of season the Coast to Coast walk beckons for Rob and myself, and nature has already begun her transformation as we continue our training walks.

The full song title in this week’s Blog heading reads “Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There Is A Season)”. Perhaps best known as a hit for The Byrds in 1965, this interesting piece adopts lyrics from the biblical Book of Ecclesiastes set to music, and initially performed in the late 1950’s, by US folk artist and social activist Pete Seeger. Along with the shift in season, the words of the song (reproduced below) capture something of the inevitability of change, the limit of human power, and the notion that nothing is ultimately reliable. These sentiments align with others in Seeger’s repertoire of anti-war ballads, such as ‘Where Have All The Flowers Gone” (also revived in the 1960’s, this time by Peter, Paul and Mary amongst many others), and they hold true as ever in today’s troubled world. The power of lyrics!

Back now to the the great outdoors, and recent walks have certainly showcased the upcoming transition from winter to early spring, as well as producing some surreal twilights.

Frosties for breakfast
Sunrise on Ashridge House . . .
. . . before an early morning walk through a silvern Golden Valley
A radiant start to the day . . .
. . . and a purple dusk over Berkhamsted, . . .
. . . whilst north Norfolk went with amber!
Snowdrops and aconites, near Aldbury, . . .
. . . daffodils on their way, . . .
. . . a budding spiraea japonica, . . .
. . . and catkins in the hedgerow (hazel, I believe), near Ashley Green

Brace yourselves now for Dudley and Eunice, and let’s all hope that we emerge into a fine spring, and that the prayer in the final line of these lyrics indeed comes to pass.

Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There Is A Season)

To everything (turn, turn, turn)
There is a season (turn, turn, turn)
And a time to every purpose, under heaven

A time to be born, a time to die
A time to plant, a time to reap
A time to kill, a time to heal
A time to laugh, a time to weep

To everything (turn, turn, turn)
There is a season (turn, turn, turn)
And a time to every purpose, under heaven

A time to build up, a time to break down
A time to dance, a time to mourn
A time to cast away stones, a time to gather stones together

To everything (turn, turn, turn)
There is a season (turn, turn, turn)
And a time to every purpose, under heaven

A time of love, a time of hate
A time of war, a time of peace
A time you may embrace, a time to refrain from embracing

To everything (turn, turn, turn)
There is a season (turn, turn, turn)
And a time to every purpose, under heaven

A time to gain, a time to lose
A time to rend, a time to sew
A time for love, a time for hate
A time for peace, I swear it’s not too late
