LETJOG – Thank You All!

Before I leave for Cornwall I would like to say a massive thank you, to !!! EVERYBODY !!!

When I set out, in earnest, to proceed with LETJOG, I had absolutely no idea of how the walk would be received by family and friends. I have to say that the response, from so many, has been overwhelming. I am hugely grateful for all the messages of support, and these will mean so much to me when the going gets tough (which it will). Thank you all! That my fundraising target figure of £3,000 has been reached before I even take one step is astonishing, and I cannot thank you all enough for your generous donations to the three charities, for which Mind, Parkinson’s UK, and The Hospice of St Francis are extremely grateful.

I have consulted with the three charities, and I have asked the question as to which areas the funds raised by LETJOG might go. I have asked this on the basis that I double the fundraising target to £6,000 (namely £2,000 per charity). The charities have given me the following messages to share here:

MIND: “What a donation of £2000 would mean for Mind. Listed here are some of the things the donation will go toward but please note that this is not an exhaustive list because the donation will go where it is mostly needed. * It could help our Infoline answer calls and help over 250 people with mental health problems, providing someone with vital support and information about help available for them. * It could run our online peer support community Side By Side for over 50 hours, helping people connect with others and feel less alone. * It could help us campaign for better mental health services from the Government, ensuring people get the support they need, as soon as they need it. * It could pay the cost of one of our Infoline or Legal Line advisors for about 20 days. * Thanks to your gift we can maintain our advisors, ready to answer calls for support and help. * Your support ensures we can be there – on the other end of the phone, in local communities and campaigning hard for better services and support.”

PARKINSON’S UK: “The money raised will help drive forward pioneering research projects supported by the charity, as well as provide vital support services for people affected by Parkinson’s. £2000 could fund a clinical researcher for 83 hours or provide 100 hours of care from a specialist Parkinson’s nurse, or could pay for 10 helpline advisors to provide support and information for over 14 hours. £2000 could make a great deal of difference so we thank everyone for their generous donations towards Nick’s inspiring fundraising target.”

THE HOSPICE OF ST FRANCIS: “£2,000 could fund our Community Nursing Team for 2 days. Caring for patients and their loved ones at home, this team have been so busy throughout the pandemic; caring for those vulnerable and isolated at home. Often, during the height of the pandemic, our Community Nursing Team have been the only ones able to cross that welcome mat and provide a much needed hand in the darkness. We believe that no one should die alone and no carer be left isolated, £2,000 can help us make sure The Hospice of St Francis can always be there – thank you”.

And a final word. My thanks go to everyone at the three charities – to Antonella at Mind, to Beth at Parkinson’s UK, and to Lucy at The Hospice of St Francis, and to all of their colleagues, for their support and advice over the last few weeks. To my wife Rachel, who, as ever, has been alongside me throughout the planning of this walk (and indeed on many of my training walks), and to my son Alistair for all his help with the technology: thank you both! And a huge thank you to everyone who has supported me on my journey to ‘Base Camp’ – your encouragement is a wonderful send-off as I set off for Cornwall this Monday morning! Thank you!
